Meet Kelsey Friedlander: The Founder Behind Salt Ivory
Some of the best ideas begin around a table.
For Salt Ivory founder Kelsey Friedlander, what began as a simple curiosity about Mahjong quickly became something much larger: an obsession with the game, the objects surrounding it, and the traditions created when people make time to gather.
But Salt Ivory wasn't born from Mahjong alone.
It is the culmination of more than a decade spent learning how ideas become products, products become brands, and perhaps most importantly how the smallest details can make something feel truly special.
Before Salt Ivory
Long before there were sketches, samples or a name called Salt Ivory, Kelsey was building the foundation for it without realizing it.
After earning her degree in International Business from Bryant University, she spent more than a decade working across corporate retail, branding and marketing.
Along the way, she developed an appreciation for far more than what a customer sees on the shelf.
Sourcing. Manufacturing. Finance. Supply chain. Market demand. Brand development. The endless rounds of refining that happen between an initial idea and a finished product.
It was the behind-the-scenes work that fascinated her most.
Because beautiful products don't simply happen.
They are considered.
When Mahjong Became More Than a Game
Then came Mahjong.
What started as curiosity quickly became the kind of obsession familiar to anyone who has fallen in love with the game.
There was the strategy, of course.
But what stayed with Kelsey was everything surrounding it.
The standing games among friends. The cocktails beside the racks. The conversations between hands. The beautiful homes and tables where people gathered. The wonderfully old-fashioned ritual of setting aside a few hours simply to sit together and play.
Mahjong felt timeless.
And yet Kelsey saw an opportunity to reconsider the objects surrounding it through the lens of luxury, interiors, travel and thoughtful product design.
Not to change the traditions of the game.
To create beautiful things worthy of becoming part of them.
An Idea of Her Own
After years spent helping build other brands, Kelsey found herself wanting a creative outlet that felt deeply personal.
Something she could build from the ground up.
Something that brought together the disciplines she had spent her career learning with the things she had always been drawn to: beautiful products, unforgettable places, entertaining, interiors and the rituals that make a house feel alive.
That idea became Salt Ivory Collection.
What started with luxury Mahjong is becoming a larger world centered around the art of gathering.
Inspired by a Sense of Place
Travel is woven into the Salt Ivory design language.
Kelsey wanted each collection to begin not simply with a color palette or trend, but with a place and a feeling.
The kind of destination you continue thinking about long after you've returned home.
Sun-warmed stone. Lush palms. Old hotels. Beautifully set tables. Coastal landscapes. Long dinners. The particular light of an evening spent somewhere you wish you could stay a little longer.
Those memories become the foundation for original artwork, thoughtfully selected materials and collections designed to feel collected rather than decorated.
Designing a Different Kind of Mahjong Brand
From the beginning, Kelsey's vision for Salt Ivory extended beyond creating another set of Mahjong tiles.
She envisioned a house of luxury Mahjong accessories, entertaining pieces and objects for the table each created with the same attention to form, function and detail.
The first product to bring that vision to life is The Butler.
A portable Mahjong side table, The Butler was created around a deceptively simple question:
Where does everything else go?
Drinks, phones, cards and personal belongings inevitably compete with tiles and racks for space. The Butler gives those objects a considered place beside the player, leaving the Mahjong table reserved for the game.
It is practical by design.
Beautiful by intention.
And representative of the way Kelsey approaches Salt Ivory as a whole: find the overlooked detail and make it worth noticing.
Building More Than a Mahjong Company
While Mahjong is where the Salt Ivory story begins, Kelsey has never viewed it as where the story ends.
The larger vision is a world centered around gathering, hosting, travel and beautiful objects that become part of people's traditions.
Mahjong tiles and mats.
Accessories for the table.
Pieces for entertaining.
Objects you bring on vacation, give to a friend, leave displayed in your home and reach for so often that eventually you can't remember the table without them.
The goal isn't to chase what is fashionable for a season.
It's to create pieces that feel as though they could have always existed.
A New Tradition Begins
Perhaps that's the most personal part of Salt Ivory.
After a career spent understanding how brands are built, Kelsey finally had the opportunity to build a world entirely of her own.
One informed by where she's been.
Inspired by places she hasn't forgotten.
And centered around something increasingly precious: making time to gather.
Salt Ivory may have begun with a Mahjong table.
But Kelsey's vision has always been about what happens around it.
Beautiful things. Familiar faces. And traditions worth keeping.
